Squirrel Scouts – Big Adventures for Little People

Squirrel Scouts is the youngest section of the Scouts family, created especially for 4–6 year olds, and it’s already making a big impact across our District. Full of energy, curiosity and fun, Squirrels provides a safe and exciting first step into Scouting.

Squirrel Drey meetings are built around play, creativity and discovery. Through games, stories, crafts and simple activities, young people begin to explore the world around them while developing confidence, independence and social skills. From getting active and trying new things to learning how to be kind, helpful and part of a team, Squirrels experience Scouting in a way that’s perfectly suited to their age.

The programme is flexible and child-led, allowing Dreys to shape activities around what excites them most. One week might involve outdoor adventures, messy crafts or music and movement; another could focus on exploring nature, helping in the community or learning simple skills. Everything is designed to be fun, inclusive and engaging, while gently introducing the values of Scouting.

Squirrels also give young people a strong sense of belonging. Wearing their Squirrel uniform with pride, they are part of a worldwide movement that encourages friendship, respect and teamwork. As they progress, Squirrels build the confidence and enthusiasm that prepares them perfectly for moving on to Beavers when they are ready.

For families, Squirrel Scouts offers a supportive environment where children can grow, make friends and burn off energy, all while having fun. For our District, Squirrels represent an exciting opportunity to welcome new families into Scouting and strengthen the future of our Groups.

Whether you’re a parent looking for an engaging activity for your child, or an adult interested in volunteering and helping young people thrive, Squirrel Scouts is a fantastic place to start. Big adventures really do begin with small steps.
