About Christchurch Scouts

Christchurch Scouts helps young people develop skills for life through adventure, friendship and new experiences.

Across Christchurch and the surrounding communities, our volunteers provide a welcoming and inclusive programme for young people—from their first adventures in Squirrels through to Explorers and Scout Network.

Scouting in Christchurch

Scouting has been part of our local community since 1908. Christchurch District was formed in 1909, officially registered in 1910 and received its formal warrant in 1911.

Since then, generations of young people have enjoyed camps, outdoor activities, international adventures, community projects and weekly meetings. Although Scouting has changed considerably over the years, its purpose remains the same: helping young people gain confidence, learn practical skills, make friends and discover what they are capable of.

Scouting Today

Our local Scout Groups and sections run activities throughout the week. Young people take part in everything from cooking, crafts and teamwork challenges to camping, climbing, hiking and water activities.

Every section has its own character, but they all share the same commitment to providing safe, enjoyable and inspiring opportunities for young people.

Everything we do is made possible by volunteers. Some work directly with young people, while others help with administration, governance, equipment, buildings, events and maintaining our activity sites.

You do not need to have been a Scout or be an outdoor expert to volunteer. Whatever your skills, interests or available time, there are many ways to become part of the team.

Our Heritage

Christchurch has a proud Scouting history stretching back more than a century. Our heritage website records the development of local Groups, the people who supported them and the adventures enjoyed by generations of young people.
