The position of 'Mayor's Scout' was first instigated in 1973 and the duties of the holder of this unique position in Christchurch has not changed since that time.
"To accompany the Mayor of Christchurch on suitable ceremonial and civic occasions, to render service and answer questions about the Ancient Borough and Scouting affairs."
However in recent times the position has evolved to incorporate the representation of the entire Youth of Christchurch as well as the Scout Movement.
Scouts aged between 13 and 18 years of age who have a proven commitment to scouting; in depth knowledge of Christchurch and the surrounding area; a pleasant character and confidence are usually selected. The selection process involves an interview of those members recommended by the Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Leaders of the Groups and Units in the Christchurch District.
The chosen Scout serves a term of six months as Mayor's Scout. Events attended by the Mayor accompanied by the Mayor's Scout include those functions where a representation of the Youth of Christchurch is deemed appropriate and desirable. Past functions have included local summer fetes and garden parties, Church services and visits to the Borough by other Dignitaries and VIPs to name but a few.
The holder of the title 'Mayor's Scout' is indeed in a unique position to promote the good of the Youth of Christchurch and of Scouting and all other Youth Organisations in the area.
The appointment of Mayor's Scout was first proposed early in the 1970's as a way of bringing Scouting before the public, showing that the Movement is associated with the public service and that Scouts do care about what goes on around them.
The first Mayor's Scout was Roy Freeman and Alderman Miss Caroline Sharp, the then Mayor of Christchurch invested him on 23rd March 1973. The original sash of office was presented with an historic shoulder knot. The Founder Baden-Powell presented this knot to Councillor William Bridge, a former equerry and Mayor of Christchurch 'for services rendered to Scouting'. Both can now be seen in the Mayor's Parlour.
